Another third party game that seems like the last thing you’d expect on a Nintendo console, but surprisingly this one runs worse than either Street Fighter 6 or Split Fiction. World Of Assassination is essentially all three modern Hitman games combined into one, so there’s a ton of content available, as you try to take out your targets in as inventive a manner as possible. We were interested to see how the mouse controls work, but while they’re fine on a technical level they’re really not necessary, given how little of the map you can see at any one time. Both the Sonic and Shadow portions run at a consistent 60fps and visually the graphics don’t seem any worse than the PlayStation 5 version – although some textures, like Shadow’s chest fur, look a bit blurry in places. The cut scenes also don’t reach 60fps, even on performance mode, but that’s the case for the PlayStation 5 version too.

I don’t think Avowed’s combat could sustain my attention over the course of a linear, 15-hour action game, but as one of the main components in a story-led, exploration-rewarding RPG, it’s a lot more fun than I had dared hope for. I’ve been able to get it to the table a few times both as a player and as a Game Master. I’m happy to report that I enjoyed my experiences building and playing adventures in fantasy worlds with my friends. Like pretty much all online games released in the current era of gaming, Rematch’s launch isn’t the finish line; it’s really just the kick-off.

Every year we go through our archive of reviews to look back at the highest reviewed games at IGN. This year, 27 games received a score of 9 or 10, and of that only one new game received a 10 (the other 10 was given to a re-review of a very popular game). This is a marked downturn from 2023 where 36 games received our highest review scores, including five games that received a 10. The domains overlap one another so part of character creation is figuring out which domain power each player claims if they share one with another player. It’s one of many examples of how Daggerheart encourages collaborative play between the players. Hope points can be used by players to add their experiences to rolls, power certain abilities.
I won’t say much about how it turned out other than that, while I did see one big reveal coming a mile away, there was more to it that caught me off guard in a way that made me smile. I don’t think it’s much of a spoiler to say that the Rat King does not turn out to be The Joker, and in fact Camouflaj is admirably restrained in its use of Batman’s nemesis. After the big, eye-rolling reveal of Arkham Origins, and the enormous posthumous role he played in Arkham Knight, leaning on that crutch once again would’ve annoyed me to no end; I breathed a sigh of relief when other characters got some time in the spotlight. Perhaps that’s not the kind of game Avowed wants to be; it definitely succeeds on the somewhat humbler terms of a narrative-driven action RPG with memorable characters, a gorgeous world, and really fun combat. Just imagine if one day, these separate Obsidian tracks—spicy, reactive CRPGs and sumptuous first-person narrative adventures—perfectly intersect. Some of the missable sidequests, particularly in the first area, take me places other studios would want to frontload in the opening hours of the main quest.
