That said, I’ve also seen a disappointingly recognizable amount of jank and poor performance, and the mostly unchanged enemy scaling apparatus hasn’t gotten less irritating with time. Kai’s concern when he confesses his doubts about whether he can fit in among a team. And Marius’ frequent cursing of bleste when anxious of traps ahead. Crafting convincing characters is quite a feat as is, but crafting convincing characters whose stories and quirks stick with players long after the credits roll is another – and Obsidian manages to nail both in Avowed. Avowed takes Obsidian’s penchant for stellar storytelling and combines it with breathtaking visuals to create what might just stand as one of this year’s best RPGs.

Killing Floor 3 Review

It might seem like a lot for a fantasy RPG to balance, but it all blends into Eora seamlessly and breathes a gust of real life into Avowed’s story. Nothing ever strikes me as overly complicated or mentally taxing, though – and this speaks to Obsidian’s strength in world-building. I fit into the setting not as a partially disconnected player, but as the Godlike envoy concerned with the dealings of Eora. Avowed is, after all, an RPG, which means that choices are core to the gameplay. I often find myself asking my party how they feel about said choices in difficult situations.

For years, only one undisputed king was sitting on the throne, not scared of rumors of growing competition and abandoning or prolonging projects. South of Midnight delights with its looks and soundtrack, which is much better than anyone could expect. It’s a shame, though, that aesthetic experience isn’t followed by equally great gameplay.

We also considered what players are using games for — in the era of streaming, content creation and gameplay go hand-in-hand. And, of course, there are the games themselves, which serve as the foundation for it all. Chris started playing PC games in the 1980s, started writing about them in the early 2000s, and (finally) started getting paid to write about them in the late 2000s. Following a few years as a regular freelancer, PC Gamer hired him in 2014, probably so he’d stop emailing them asking for more work.

Progression doesn’t just lead to better weapons and gear but the feeling that you’re becoming more a part of the Dune universe, and I get a little buzz every time I advance enough to craft something from the fiction. I love hopping in a buggy and driving out for a resource run, using a mining laser to extract minerals from boulders in the mountains or crystals in the murky ravines. I’m always happy to fly my ‘thopter out to the dunes to collect a resource called flour sand, dodging the angry sandworms that show up every few minutes. It’s a suitably tough introduction to the dangers of the desert planet, but you’re not powerless for long. Within a few hours you’ll have the tools to build your first base and even craft a vehicle to begin braving the dunes and sandworms that lurk beneath it.
